64. Maps

Ever-grinding with the online scene, Maps is an upcoming warrior in his own right. When he’s not asking for dales, Maps can be found in a one-off stream or competing in an online bracket, keeping everyone at the edge of their seats. With a treasure trove of characters at his disposal (tri-main anyone?) X marks the spot for this Chicago native.

63. Meraki

The Chilean Smash Remix monster Meraki made his debut appearance in the states this year at Supernova 2024, traveling with his South American contemporary, Nax. The two arrived in good spirits at Teflon Ron’s apartment about a week or so before the big tournament and things were going pretty well – they were partying, playing games, and just having a great time like one typically does at Ron’s place. I was stoked to meet Meraki as I had watched a tense game 5 set of his vs Nax months before he came to America and I saw how skilled his falcon was. In person, it was no different, Meraki was able to hang with the greats in remix and vanilla alike – with his incredibly fundamentally sound Ganondorf and his unorthodox Luigi – and most importantly his agile and guarded Falcon. Unfortunately, fate would have something cruel in store for Meraki, as he fell ill just a day before the tournament. Despite being very sick, the Chilean challenger mustered up his all and took out the Rochester legend Bobakanoosh, veteran and fellow Luigi player Freean, Chicago homie Maps, and two of the adept German players: Bert and Wolvechen. In D1, Meraki wasn’t able to close out sets, but he did manage to take impressive games off big names like Josh Brody, Crovy, and Hotline. We’re wishing for a swift return back to the states so we can see a full power version of Meraki – as well as another chance for us to all hang out and party with him.

62. Bert

As a competitor, Bert is very hard on himself. When I catch up with the other German players after Division 4 at Supernova, they inform me in good spirits that they’ve made it through their first pools with ease. Bert, on the other hand, simply states that he’d expected the opposition to be stronger. Maybe Bert doesn’t realise that by winning the pool with an upset over Cool Lime, he’s already notched Germany’s first big win of the weekend. Or maybe he just doesn’t care. Out of practice and unhappy with his play, Bert knows that the real challenge still lies ahead of him.
Eventually, Bert makes his way into the extremely competitive Division 2, and secures his best wins yet, prevailing over opponents like Maps and Freean. Most notably he defeats one of Rochester’s rising stars, Bobakanoosh—bringing home Germany’s strongest win of the event. In a twist of fate, Bert then ends up facing his German colleague Wolvechen for 4th place in the pool and a coveted spot in Division 1. Wolvechen comes out on top, and Bert is relegated to the Division 2 Wild Card where Ohio Kirby main HardBody ends his run at 48th place. Despite this, Bert’s formidable spread of wins and losses has led to him being the only German representative to break into the year-end rankings.
After the tournament, Bert is still dissatisfied, wondering how much further he could have made it with more preparation. I can’t help but wonder the same, and I look forward to seeing just how far Bert and his fellow Germans can go the next time they pay us a visit.

61. Hardbody

Making a return to competitive Super Smash Bros. 64 for the first time in over a decade, his first since Apex 2012, Hardbody had an unknowingly tough act to follow up. At Apex 2012 Hardbody had eliminated future top 5 player in the world, KeroKeroppi, from the tournament. Showing a remarkable ability to compete to this day, Hardbody collected wins on Shears, Sextc, and Germany’s Bert through his run to Division 2 wildcard at Supernova 2024. If this isn’t impressive enough, he did this all as the 10th seed of his division 4 pool. Tantalizingly close to playing himself into division 1, Hardbody now has the deepest run from a unseeded player in Supernova history. If he continues his return to the game, will he be able to follow the same upwards trajectory of the man he once defeated? Only time will tell.

60. Isildur1

If you’re in the scene I’m sure you’ve heard his patented “OHH” from across the venue. He’s always been good, but 2024 was the year he was able to show his potential. He was on the cusp of top 64 in 2023, making Expansion Pak, so this has been a long time coming. Being able to hone his skills with the Da Bear and Madrush in Colorado it’s no surprise he was able to get solid wins to put him on the rankings. Definitely a player to watch out for in 2025.

59. Miniohh!

A staple of PA/Philly smash for around a decade now, there are not many that do not know his face. This includes 8 year old Ultimate players who have seen him from rage compilations. What comes with raging, more times than not, is passion for the game and this is something Miniohh! has in droves. Placing 49th and Supernova 2024 and 17th at Keystoned VII, beating Hartinator, Hack, Cool Lime, dmolz, and MasterHandJob (multiple times) are just a few of his marquee wins this year. Maining Kirby, Miniohh!’s aggressive playstyle forces his opponents to make quick decisions which leads to him capitalizing on mistakes. Just when you think he plateaued or even is washed up Miniohh! consistently seems to improve year in and year out. At this point, only time can tell how far Miniohh! can go as we watch more and more (or less and less) controllers smashed along the way.

58. Schmerka Berl

“He’s sneaky good” is what Josh Brody said to me following my loss to Schmerka Berl at Supernova 2024. With sound fundamentals Schmerka Berl makes his debut onto the Smash 64 rankings at #58. Competing in only doubles at Battle at the Border 2, he made the most of his one and only singles event this year by attending Supernova 2024 and playing a whopping 23 sets earning wins over a slew of current or previously ranked players. I think it is now time to consider this “sneaky good” player as just “good”. How much further will Schmerka ascend in 2025?

57. Shears

You’re walking in the venue, there’s players around, and your pool is about to start. Out of the corner of your eye you spot him: David Shears. He’s cranking up the volume of his CRT, about 5 feet back. He gets up on his feet and breaks into a rant. He’s gaining on you: David Shears. You’re looking for a way out, but you’re all cornered now. He’s almost upon you now, and you can see the rage on his face! My god, he’s everywhere! Running for your life (From David Shears.) He’s revving up his 2012 Chevy Cruze. (It’s David Shears.) Lurking in the shadows, worldwide traveler David Shears. Living in his car, (David Shears.) Parrying for sport, (David Shears.) Refusing to DI, actual, freak of nature David Shears.
Now it’s dark and you seem to have lost him, but you’re hopelessly lost yourself. Stranded with his Yoshi and Luigi. You make your way through the stage. A-ha! In the distance, a safe platform to stand on. Hope! You move readily towards it. But your character! AH! It’s been Fair’d!
Taken down CTG and Raychu, (By David Shears.) He’s lining up his Up Air ladder. (It’s David Shears). Now the Yid and Bobakanoosh as well, fallen to David Shears. 7th at Kirbstomped 9, 9th at Victory Road and Ghost Town 2. Fighting for your life with David Shears, wrestling away from David Shears.
You unplug your controllers, ears ringing from the deafening hiss of the CRT. But you have won. You have escaped David Shears.

56. SOTO

The year of Samus may be coming and SOTO plans to be a big part of that. Once a Kirby main long ago, SOTO continues to blur the lines of the tier list picking up bigger wins the more committed he is to Smash 64’s lady of the night. While deadly with Samus, if there was a 12 Character Battle power rankings SOTO would very well be one of the best in North America.

55. Bloogo

Often frustrated that people forget his name, Bloogo just keeps on improving, almost using this as fuel to spite people who forget his beautiful face. With a strong neutral and ever growing punish game, Bloogo is a competitor that every opponent must respect. His consistency keeps his floor extremely high – in all of 2024 he only lost to two people that aren’t or haven’t been ranked; This is with him attending Snova, Keystoned and PYAT4. Over the past 3 years Bloogo has so many wins over ranked players that it is actually surprising to see him on these rankings for the first time. Bloogo’s perseverance and dedication has not only landed him in NA’s top 64 but also #1 on the NJ power rankings. Known mostly for his Pikachu which has strong approach options and insanely good flow chart edge guarding, he has recently added a polished Kirby to his arsenal. With Bloogo continuing to improve faster than the field, it will become impossible to not remember the name Bloogo.

54. McGodd

Hailing from the west coast, McGodd is a seasoned player who has hung up the controller before — only to come back even stronger. With a second Whispy wind, McGodd is taunt cancelling on the competition. His patience, aptitude, and understanding all coalesce by his ‘learn by doing’ mentality that has been taught through study; a ‘Crovy Jr.’ in some minds.

53. Razz

Razz isn’t so terrible? Are you kidding me? When was the last time you saw a player with such an ability and movement with Yoshi? Platform cancelling DownB’s off the side platform of Dreamland, fishing for UpBs like his life depends on it? Razz puts the game in another level, both in Singles and Doubles, and we will be blessed if we ever see a player with his skill and passion for the game again. He took down the likes of B33F, Raychu, Shears, and Cool Lime – how can you not respect such talent and performance? Razz breaks the combo contest. Razz breaks Twitter. Razz breaks the rules. Once an Expansion Pak, and now an officially ranked player. You can keep your statistics. 9th at Prototype 4 and Keystoned VII? 17th at Frame 14? Sorry, but I prefer the magic.

52. Velocity Jones

Though well known for his kindness and hospitality, it may be time to fear Velocity Jones after becoming a stoned cold killer in 2024. Having a breakthrough Kirbstompd 9 he was able to overcome some bracket demons and smoke his opponents. Celebrating being ranked is just the beginning for one of Michigan’s finest as the sky’s the limit for how high Velocity Jones can get.

51. LETSGO

One of the mainstays of the Seattle smash scene, LETSGO has always been known as one of the strongest and most consistent players in the region. While usually thought of as a solo fox main, he spent much of last year developing other characters which have yielded strong results in tournament. His spacing, positional play, and character knowledge have manifested into a strong and well rounded player, able to dig deep to win tough sets over strong opponents.
