What is Elo Ranking?

At its core, the Elo system is a dynamic mathematical rating system that adjusts a player’s ranking based on the outcome of matches. The central idea is straightforward: the winner gains points, and the loser loses points. For Smash 64, every game matters in this Elo ranking. However, the number of points exchanged is not fixed; it depends on the difference in skill levels between the two players.

In a typical scenario, if a lower-ranked player defeats a higher-ranked opponent, they earn more points than if they had won against someone of similar or lower skill. Conversely, if a higher-ranked player defeats a lower-ranked opponent, they earn fewer points. This asymmetrical point distribution allows the system to adapt and accurately reflect changes in a player’s skill level over time.
