2019-2020 Ranking for Super Smash Bros. 64 made by Andykins, Big Red, Box, Dogs_Johnson, Dr. D, Josh Brody, and Pokehero based on tournaments played on the NTSC-U version of Smash 64 from Jan 1, 2019 – Mar 31, 2020 (due to COVID-19).

Qualifying players must have attended at least two majors (or similarly notable regionals) that was played on the NTSC-U version of the game. As a result, players who only attended one event were excluded from the rankings. To remedy this, a “Hidden Bosses” section was created, listing 10 players who likely would have qualified had they attended an additional event. The seven panelists then ranked qualifying players from #1 to #64, including a few additional players who just missed the cut into the “Expansion Pak”. Rankings were initially released on Twitter

The man, the Yoshi, the combo contest master himself, Prince ranks in at number 10. Prince traveled to America three times and even went to Peru to compete in Inkafest, where he placed 7th against fellow NA competitor Josh Brody, as well as regional partner, Shizuku. Although his rank may have fallen by one placement, it’s clear that his gameplay elevated in 2019. Prince proved how threatening he could be with two wins against Josh Brody as well as a win against Robert. Win or lose, Prince is a fan favorite and wins the hearts of of spectators around the world with his punish-heavy oriented playstyle and flashy red Yoshi.

Fidel’s list of wins speaks for itself. He’s beaten players from pretty much every active region of smash and had practically no bad losses. Known as his previous tag, HAMMERHEART, Fidel has jumped up 12 spots from his previous ranking of 21 in 2018 Hailing from PA, he’s one of the few heavy hitters of the state alongside friend and competitor, KD3. Fidel’s playstyle has elements of defensiveness, heavy use of baits, and a deep bag of tricks. He’s very knowledgeable of where you want to position yourself and will cut off avenues constantly, stuffing you out. Fidel proved that he was capable of almost taking a major when he went toe-to-toe with Josh Brody in a game 5 bracket reset Grand Finals at Snosa 5. LD said that Fidel used to be a top 5 netplay player back in the day– it’s nice to see Fidel return to form.

Best Wins: CTG, Czar, Dogs_johnson, Isai, JaimeHR, Janitor, Josh Brody (x2) KD3, LD (x3), Meipon, Mercy, Robert

Robert’s position at #8 is the culmination of a gradual ascent of the rankings over the course of several years, establishing himself as one of the strongest players in North America. His patient, efficient and precise style contributed to an imposing presence reminiscent of the top players of Japan. Robert displayed dominance in two trips to the state of Texas, making quick work of CTG and Nackle at Low Tier City before capping off the year with a win over Josh Brody, and two punishing 3-0 victories over Tacos at Smashtoberfest. Along with a signature win over Shalaka at Shine, Robert’s explosive run in the tail end of 2019 was one of the most fascinating and impressive storylines of the year.

Best Wins: CTG, Darkhorse (x2), Dogs_Johnson (x2), Josh Brody, Nackle (x4), Raychu (x2), Shalaka (x2), tacos (x2)

Josh Brody is best known for two things, his consistently intelligent Pikachu play and being well traveled, 2019 was more of the same. Josh had nearly double the tournaments attended, sets played, and overall wins compared to the next closest player, all while maintaining an impressive win rate of 86%. This amount of attendance paired with deep bracket runs at each tournament allowed Brody to test himself against the very best in every region. Wins over Prince, Fidelcastro22, Jam and Gerson highlight that Josh Brody is a world class talent and well deserving of the #7 spot. Will he fall off in the next ranking period?

Best Wins: CTG (x3), Fidelcastro22 (x4) Gerson, JaimeHR (x3), Jam (x4), Janitor (x2), KD3, LD(x2), Lowww (x2), Mercy, Prince(x3), Qapples, Raychu (x2), Robert, Shalaka, Shihman (x2), Shizuku, StradoN

Tacos once again landed at 6th overall for the 2nd year in a row. He dominated the field with a win against 13 ranked players on the season. Unpredictable as ever, Tacos managed to combine his flash and efficiency while showcasing a whopping 6 characters used in tournament sets. You read that right: this man is a threat to win with half the cast. In all, tacos had an amazing resume on the year, only losing to players in the top 20, and capping off the year with a winning record over Josh Brody and KeroKeroppi. This Period again reminded us of Tacos repeated dominance in doubles, grabbing first place at GOML and SSC and a pair of 2nd place finishes at Smashtoberfest as well as Smash ‘N’ Splash 5.

Best Wins: Czar, Dboss, Darkhorse, Josh Brody (x3), KeroKeroppi (x2), Loto, Lowww, Qapples, Revan, Shihman (x2)

In 2019 Alvin proved yet again that he is at the top of an extremely skilled South American scene over other strong contenders such as Nax, Gohan and Tavomono by getting 2nd at Inkafest behind only Wizzrobe, in one of the most exciting sets in recent memory, a grueling 10 game grand finals. Another thrilling set vs Mercy and a win on prolific Japanese pika, maha, lead Alvin to his 3rd SSC top 8 in a row.

Best Wins: CTG, Gohan, maha, Mercy, Nackle, Nax, Sonjo, Tito

Kero’s 2019 competition was stacked with 16 of his 22 sets being against other top 64 players. With his great tech skill and strong punishes, he was the only one to be able to defeat KYSK in 2019 and did it en route to his 5th place finish at SSC. At Smash ‘N’ Splash 5 Kero played the entire tournament as Captain Falcon and defeated Josh Brody, EG, Dog_Johnson, and B33F on his way to a 3rd place finish. Borrowing (or perhaps sharing) from his brother, Kero incorporates fast plat-to-plat movement and precise dance dances to pivot off platforms when you least expect it, unloading falcon’s explosive speed to catch players off-guard. We’ll see what more this Falcon has in store to offer as Kero explores more with the character and ventures away from only playing Pikachu.

Best Wins: B33F, Dogs_Johnson, EG (x2), JaimeHR, Josh Brody, kysk, Shalaka, Sheer, tacos

After being ranked 5th and 4th in the previous two rankings, Wizzrobe continues his ascent on the rankings coming in at number 3. The American Yoshi main traveled to Peru, winning Inka Fest after an exciting grand final reset vs. Alvin. Excelling in two other smash games Wizzy opted to focus on 64 at SSC19, placing 3rd amongst the best competition in the world.
Other accomplishments include being signed to Team Envy in June 2019. He also won “Best Pop Off” at the Smashies at SSC19.

Best Wins: Alvin (x2), Dogs_Johnson, fidelcastro22, isai, Kurabba, maha, meipon, Prince, Robert, Spongy

From September 2017 to August 2019 SuPeRbOoMfAn finished first in every tournament he entered (18 in a row) until his 5th place finish and subsequent retirement from competing on console following Super Smash Con 2019. We may never see this kind of dominance in North America, or the world, ever again. During the ranking period, Boom bolstered a 55-2 record in sets and was several steps above everyone else in North America all while being very skilled in the entire cast of characters. While not included in the ranking considerations, Boom also placed first in one of the largest online events to date, Quarantined Rapport East Coast, while playing low tiers Samus and Donkey Kong.

Best Wins: Alvin, Darkhorse, EG, fidelcastro22, Hero Pie, JaimeHR (x2), Josh Brody (x5), KD3, lowww, Prince, Raychu, tacos (x4)

Known for his aggressive and punishing style kysk tops the ranking list at #1. Traveling from Japan, kysk made the most of his trips to the United States, placing 1st at 64’s two largest tournaments of 2019, Genesis 6 and Super Smash Con. These placement and strong wins over top players solidified his place atop the rankings. At Super Smash Con he defeated two previous world #1’s (SuPeRbOoMfAn and wario) on his way to his first place finish. Along with his victory at Super Smash Con, kysk also dethroned the Combo King Prince at the combo contest, performing four dazzling combos — two of which were done on the first try. While not apart of the ranking considerations, kysk placed first in Japans Kanto 2019 over other top Japanese talent such as Kurabba, Sekirei, Wangera, and wario.
